GPA Scale Chart — the 4.0 scale, letter by letter

The standard US 4.0 grade scale: every letter grade, its grade points, and the percentage band it usually represents. This is the exact scale every calculator on EasyGPA uses.

How to read this chart

Grade points are the currency of GPA. Each course converts its letter to points from the middle column, the points are weighted by credits, and the average of those weighted points is your GPA — the full walkthrough is in how to calculate GPA.

Two honest caveats. First, the percentage bands are the most common convention, not a law: plenty of schools run an A from 90%, and a few award 4.3 points for an A+. Second, plus and minus grades don't exist everywhere — some institutions use whole letters only (A = 4, B = 3), which makes each grade boundary matter much more.

Weighted high-school variants

Weighted scales bolt bonuses onto this chart rather than replacing it: add 1.0 to the points for AP/IB classes and 0.5 for Honors, capped at 5.0 per class. The high school GPA calculator applies both scales at once so you can compare.

Scale questions

Is an A+ worth more than an A?

On the standard 4.0 scale used here, no — both are capped at 4.0. A small number of schools award 4.3 for an A+, which is one reason to confirm your own institution's scale.

What percentage is a 3.5 GPA?

Roughly a B+ to A- average — around 87–89% on the percentage bands in the chart. The mapping is approximate because GPA averages letter grades, not percentages.

What is a 2.0 GPA in percentage terms?

About a C average, roughly 73–76%. A 2.0 is also the minimum GPA many colleges require to remain in good academic standing.

Why do percentage equivalents vary between schools?

The letter bands are set locally: one school's A starts at 93%, another's at 90%. The grade points attached to each letter are far more consistent than the percentage bands, which is why GPA travels between institutions better than raw percentages.
