The blending formula

Cumulative GPA is not the average of your semester GPAs — unless every term carried identical credits. The correct blend weights each part by credits: (previous GPA × previous credits + this term's quality points) ÷ total credits. A student with a 3.40 over 60 credits who adds a 3.80 term of 15 credits lands at (204 + 57) ÷ 75 = 3.48, not the naive (3.40 + 3.80) ÷ 2 = 3.60.

Cumulative GPA questions

What is cumulative GPA?

The credit-weighted average of every graded term you have completed. Each term contributes in proportion to its credits, so a heavy term counts more than a light one.

How do I combine my old GPA with this semester?

Add your previous cumulative GPA and the credits behind it, then this term's courses. New cumulative GPA = (old GPA × old credits + this term's quality points) ÷ (old credits + new credits). The calculator above does exactly this.

Why does my cumulative GPA move so slowly now?

The denominator grows every term. With 90 credits banked, a 15-credit term is only one seventh of the total — the same grades that swung your GPA as a freshman now nudge it. The target GPA calculator shows the exact maths for your numbers.

Is cumulative GPA the same as overall GPA?

In everyday use, yes. Some transcripts also show a major GPA (only courses in your major) and a term GPA; cumulative or overall means everything graded so far.
